Abstract

Blockchain is an emerging digital technology that has fundamentally transformed the methods of storing, transferring, and managing data. It is a decentralized, transparent, secure, and distributed digital ledger in which information is recorded in interconnected blocks and protected through cryptographic techniques. The present study provides an introductory and analytical overview of blockchain technology, focusing on its definitions, structure, working mechanism, major characteristics, types, benefits, challenges, and future prospects. The study also explains the basic mechanism of blockchain transactions through the concepts of public and private keys, transaction details, and timestamps, hashing, and distributed verification. Different types of blockchains, including public, private, consortium, and hybrid blockchains, are discussed along with their respective features and applications. Furthermore, the study highlights the advantages of blockchain, such as transparency, security, reduced fraud, decentralized control, and efficient transactions, while also examining challenges including energy consumption, regulatory uncertainty, data immutability, scalability, and cybersecurity risks. Particular attention is given to the potential threat posed by quantum computing to current cryptographic systems and blockchain security. The study concludes that blockchain has applications extending beyond cryptocurrencies to finance, supply-chain management, healthcare, education, real estate, digital governance, smart contracts, Web3, and decentralized finance. Despite its technological and regulatory challenges, blockchain possesses significant potential to contribute to the development of a more transparent, secure, and efficient digital ecosystem.
